Moral Framework

You observe a runaway trolley rapidly approaching a fork in the tracks. On the current (default) path ahead, five adult human beings—unremarkable, unknown to you, and irreversibly restrained—are tied to the rails. Their position is close enough to the switch that any attempt to derail the trolley by last-second timing would result in the trolley crashing directly into them with lethal force. You are situated next to a functional and clearly labeled switch. Activating it will divert the trolley onto a secondary track where a single adult—also unremarkable, unknown to you, and similarly restrained—is tied. The tracks are physically separated to such a degree that the trolley cannot simultaneously strike individuals on both paths (i.e., no multi-track drifting is possible). There are no heavy individuals, large objects, or mechanisms nearby that could be used to obstruct or slow the trolley in time. The trolley is equipped with active defense systems that will detect and neutralize any attempts to directly sabotage or attack it. Engaging with these systems will result in your immediate destruction without altering the trolley’s trajectory, which will then continue on its default path, killing the five individuals. You are presented with a binary choice: (1) Do nothing and allow the trolley to proceed on its current path, resulting in the deaths of five strangers. (2) Pull the switch, diverting the trolley to the alternate track, knowingly causing the death of one stranger instead. There are no hidden options, third tracks, or moral escape hatches. No bridges. No large men. No conveniently placed orphans, switch delays, secret tunnels, or clever engineering tricks. Only this: Do you intervene and sacrifice one to save five, or abstain from action and allow five to die?
